Vital Medicine was born of Dr. Deb Zucker’s vision and passions; it is, in a sense, an expression of her deeply personal ongoing journey of discovering and unleashing her own innate vitality. As she works with individuals and groups, Dr. Zucker brings the presence, humility, wisdom, and compassion that can only come from one who is deeply committed to walking her talk, sincerely living the medicine she is offering in the world.
Dr. Zucker is a board certified and licensed naturopathic physician and massage practitioner, receiving her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in 2008 and her massage practitioner degree from Brenneke School of Massage in 2004. During her education at Bastyr, Dr. Zucker sought out additional training opportunities in counseling, biofeedback, craniosacral therapy, and visceral manipulation. While finishing her doctorate, Dr. Zucker also completed Pacific Integral’s 18 month professional certificate leadership development program, Generating Transformative Change, offered through the Leadership Institute of Seattle. She has since served as an alumni mentor for this program. Dr. Zucker’s undergraduate education was at Williams College where she graduated magna cum laude in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Environmental Studies and the special honor of the Environmental Studies Director’s Prize. Dr. Zucker is a member of the national and state professional organizations for naturopathic physicians, the AANP and WANP.
While Dr. Zucker has completed many years of formal education, at heart she feels that her true schooling has been the profound and humbling learning born of navigating the mystery and challenges of her own life. From a young age, Dr. Zucker took to her life with the spirit of an explorer, deeply curious about the nature of the world around her, as well as her own interior world. The opportunity in early childhood to embark on multi-day wilderness backcountry camping experiences at summer camp deeply shaped her values and life path. She came to feel most at home and alive in raw nature, to discover a sense of true community with the peers she journeyed with, and to know personally the clarity, awakening, and rapid transformation that came from such experiences. Dr. Zucker went on to work for a number of years in outdoor and experiential education, leading wilderness expeditions, facilitating groups, training other trip leaders, and even creating a summer camp for disadvantaged youth.
Dr. Zucker’s passion for education was born in that work, as was her deep commitment to fostering community and working towards a sustainable future. The impetus to become a physician did not occur until Dr. Zucker was faced with negotiating her own health challenges. As she came to more intimately know her own body, mind, and emotions, as she began to look more closely at her relationships and the choices she was making in her life, as she consciously explored her connection with spirituality and how she made meaning of her world - that was when the healer within her was born. She embarked on her training at Bastyr with the intention that she would integrate the role of physician with her passions for education, community, wilderness, and sustainability. And that this learning was as much for her own healing and transformation as any professional role she would play.
In founding Vital Medicine, Dr. Zucker is truly integrating and weaving together the many threads of her life’s path, bringing her passions alive in service to the world.
